Primers & Sealers

These are the best primers and sealers to prepare surfaces for painting, improve adhesion, and enhance durability. While they serve similar purposes, they have distinct roles:

Common Types of Primers:

  • Oil-Based Primer – Best for wood, metal, and blocking stains.
  • Water-Based (Acrylic) Primer – – Low-VOC, ideal for drywall and general interior use.
  • Shellac-Based Primer – Excellent stain-blocking and odor-sealing properties.
  • Self-Etching Primer – Designed for metal surfaces to improve adhesion.

Common Types of Sealers:

  • Stain-Blocking Sealer – Used to cover tough stains (e.g., Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Primer).
  • Concrete Sealer – Protects concrete from moisture and cracking.
  • Drywall Sealer – Prepares new drywall for a smooth paint finish.

Interior Primers & Sealers

Exterior Primers & Sealers

Benefits of Primers:

  • Improves Adhesion – Helps paint stick to the surface, preventing peeling.
  • Blocks Stains – Seals water stains, smoke damage, and wood tannins from bleeding through.
  • Enhances Durability – Provides a stronger foundation for paint, making it last longer.
  • Prevents Absorption – Seals porous materials (like drywall or bare wood) so they don’t soak up too much paint.

Benefits of Sealers:

  • Seals Porous Surfaces  – Prevents excessive paint absorption on materials like drywall or concrete.
  • Prevents Stains from Bleeding – Locks in tannins from wood, smoke damage, or water stains.
  • Moisture Resistance – Helps protect surfaces in humid areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
